Visit from Dr Song of Yale University, USA Dr Vajie Song from Yale University is visiting MEA on Wednesday 2 May 2012 to talk to our senior students about studying at Yale University - one of the top three universities in the United States. Dr Song has set up up the Global Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Development (GIESD) at Yale and in collaboration with Tsinghua University. At GIESD he is both President and Senior Research Scholar. We are very grateful that Dr Song has been able to dedicate some of his valuable time to our students to discuss: 1. His education journey that led him to Yale, 2. The environment at Yale and what it is like to study and work at the university, 3. What students need to do to enter such universities in the US in terms of their application, 4. the opportunities for students to be involved in his research. |

Spirit Week Our Year 4-5 students have been studying how media impacts our lives and last week visited the Yinzhou television station. The students had a wonderful time and were on air twice last week as part of the television station's coverage. The students now want to extend their work in media and promote a Spirit Week starting the 7th of May. They have some fun plans for the week and will use this opportunity to fund raise for a worthy cause. Watch this space for more details. |
Year 4-5 students are preparing for Spirit Week which begins Monday 7 May. Students in Year 4-5 are hoping to use Spirit Week to fundraise for the (1) a greenhouse at the school, (2) Recycling bins around the school, and (3) a local animal shelter. The students in this class have organised the week themselves and presented their proposal to the Principal. The students have decided that Monday should be an Assembly with a dress up day where boys come as girls and girls dress up boys. On Tuesday they have asked for an outdoor classroom day. On Wednesday we will have an excursion to Dong Qian Lake and the Song Dynasty Statue Park. Thursday there will be a pick up garbage contest and wear everything backwards day. Friday we will plant trees at Hua Mao and students will have a Crazy Hair Day. The students will be asked to write to parents outling these ideas further by Friday 4 May. |
Payment of Fees
As part of our planning for next academic year we have asked of our staff to give their intentions as to whether they will be remaining at MEA in the new academic year. Based on teacher feedback we expect to have an extremely low staff turnover for the 2012-2013 academic year. In addition, we have hired two new staff for the PYP section - one from Canada and the other from the USA. It is important that parents also provide their intentions to the school so that we can future plan. We will be sending out pre-invoices outlining fees for next academic year in the coming few weeks. Please note we are using the term pre-invoice to differentiate from a fapiao which we define as a receipt of payment.
We are asking all parents to pay the semester one fees for 2012-2013 by Friday 29 June. If payment is made later than this date we may not be able to guarantee a place for child in a certain class. Please note that the tuition fees for 2012-2013 will be held constant with the fees that were payable this academic year. That is, there will be no fee increase.
Uniform
As a school we hold very few uniform in stock at the school. Each term parents will need to submit a form to order uniform. The uniform will then be made at your request.
Uniform for Term 4, 2012 to be ordered by Friday 14 May and to be delivered by the end of May.
Uniform for Term 1, 2012-2013 to be ordered by Friday 29 June and to be delivered by 24 August 2012
Uniform for Term 2, 2012-2013 to be ordered by 12 October 2012 and to be delivered by 13 November 2012.
Please note uniform is compulsory for assemblies and school excursions.

MEA Community Links
We would like to reinvigorate how the school links with our local community. Our students are looking at a number of initiatives in what we call Community, Action and Service (CAS). We would like to involve our parent body in the same fashion through an organisation called MEA Community Links. What this entails is:
- fostering relationships with local businesses via focus groups
- helping families that are new to Ningbo
- looking at ways in which MEA can better engage with our community and build the best school that services that community.
- a focus on projects such as how we market and communicate with the wider public about our school
We will be contacting parents to ask them to assist us where we see parents have a skill set that would be invaluable to help us achieve our goals. However, we would like all parents to feel they can join us in this endeavor. Please contact bonnie.ma@mea-international.com if you would like to be involved.
This newsletter was delayed in its publishing due to the IB Authorisation visit. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday and that students are relaxed and enthused for the final term of the year.
